5 speed Type 9 gearbox. Close ratio 2.48 1st gear helical gears

Fully rebuilt Type 9 5 speed gearbox, fitted with a helical cut close ratio gearset.

The gear ratios are: 1st 2.482,  2nd 1.61, 3rd 1.225, 4th 1.1, 5th 0.87  and are similar to the classic ‘Rocket’ gearset as used by Fords in their rally cars.

This gearbox has been developed with the Duratec user in mind. The gear tooth profiles are much larger than Ford original spec and are similar to a typical straight cut gear. The amount of engine torque this gear kit can be used with is about the same as a typical straight cut gearset.

The gears are cut to an angle of 25 degree’s this means there is more than one tooth driving at any one time which is stronger than one at a time as in straight cut gearboxes and also 95% quieter. They are also gear shaved after gear cutting to perfect the gear form. First and second gear are bored out larger than standard which saves weight. In other areas the gear train has been lightened the benefit of this is enhanced syncro life and a potential faster gear change.

First and second gear are fitted with caged needle roller bearings to reduce friction. Most importantly and where these are superior to alternatives is they utilise the V6 style front layshaft bearing which is a roller bearing rather than needle rollers. This gives reliability when running a high revving motor and can comfortably manage 7500rpm continuous and can be ‘buzzed’ to around 8000rpm. Sold outright no exchange needed. These boxes look like brand new with cases blasted and painted new bolts and washers used throughout. Includes new quick shift gear lever.
